There is a battle going on for the political control of Lebanon, the only Christian state in the Middle East.
As Israel continues to almost daily bomb Hezbollah positions in the south of the country, American political figures are throwing bombs in Washington, D.C.
Israel would like Hezbollah disarmed, which is natural for their security, but the Lebanese Army has not been so keen to carry out this task, since 40% of the LAF is Shia Muslim. The effort has not been realistic and will likely fail. Trump envoy Tom Barrack has insinuated the country could be given to the Sunni Muslim faction currently governing Syria if the Lebanese won't comply.
One thing is for sure, all interests are being heard in D.C. but the Lebanese Christian view.
The only question is what will Washington do next.
Senators' Lindsay Graham and Joni Ernst went after the LAF today for an offical post on X.
"It is clear that the Lebanese Chief Head of Defense -- because of a reference to Israel as the enemy and his weak almost non-existent effort to disarm Hezbollah -- is a giant setback for efforts to move Lebanon forward. This combination makes the Lebanese Armed Forces not a very good investment for America."
Senator Joni Ernst also replied to the LAF official X post, "Disappointed by this statement from @LebArmyOfficial. The LAF are a strategic partner, and — as I discussed with the CHOD in August — Israel has given Lebanon a real opportunity to free itself from Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists. Instead of seizing that opportunity and working together to disarm Hezbollah, the CHOD is shamefully directing blame at Israel."
