Washington — American air strikes are systematically degrading Iranian air defenses, coastal radars, and missile installations, broadening the range of advanced military options available to President Donald Trump as the five-month conflict intensifies.
The aerial campaign, according to U.S. officials who spoke to Reuters, aims to force open the blockaded Strait of Hormuz while neutralizing key Iranian assets in preparation for potential larger-scale operations. The strikes follow President Trump’s formal notification to Congress of resumed hostilities.
Shaping the Battlefield
The latest wave of bombings has concentrated on suppressing Iranian air defense networks, coastal radar sites, drone facilities, and maritime assets. Pentagon planners describe the operations as classic “shaping” maneuvers intended to reduce risks ahead of more complex actions.
“This is helping set the stage, if needed,” one U.S. official said, emphasizing that the strikes are diminishing Tehran’s capacity to counter future escalations.
The conflict, now in its fifth month, reignited after the collapse of a prior cessation agreement. Despite suffering significant losses since operations began on February 28, Iran retains functional missile stockpiles and continues to threaten shipping lanes in the Gulf region.
Tense White House Review of Options
The strategic calculus shifted further during a tense, hours-long situation room meeting yesterday, July 14, in which President Trump and his senior national security team intensively reviewed a range of escalation options. According to two officials familiar with the discussions, the session was marked by sharp exchanges over timing, risk thresholds, and the feasibility of bolder moves as Iranian provocations continued.
Expanded Tactical Options
By weakening Iran’s mainland defenses, the campaign is opening new pathways in Washington’s operational planning. Earlier military blueprints had examined options including deploying U.S. personnel along the Iranian coastline or seizing Kharg Island, the critical hub responsible for roughly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports.
While such an island operation would carry substantial risks from retaliatory fire by mainland forces, the ongoing degradation of Iranian capabilities — combined with yesterday’s deliberations — is shifting the risk calculus. Trump has previously directed U.S. forces to spare Iranian oil infrastructure where possible but has kept the seizure of Kharg Island as a live contingency.
“If we degrade them far enough and deep enough back, I would do that,” Trump told Fox News.
This move, if taken, will surely escalate domestic pressure against The White House over the war heading into the mid-terms.
Beyond coastal targets, the administration has also weighed strikes on fortified underground facilities, including the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site.
