U.S. Southern Command carried out another lethal strike on a suspected drug-running vessel in the Caribbean Sea on October 4, killing four people the command described as "narco-terrorists," according to a statement released by SOUTHCOM.
The command said Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere "executed a lethal, kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean," adding that "confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking."
SOUTHCOM released short video footage showing a projectile slamming into a moving boat, which then erupts into flames. The command did not disclose the vessel’s location, flag, cargo, or the weapon used — and the intelligence underpinning the strike has not been made public.
The operation is the latest in a campaign of maritime strikes the Trump administration launched in September 2025 against vessels it accuses of trafficking narcotics into the United States. By several counts it marks the 71st publicly acknowledged strike, with the running death toll now reported at more than 220 people.
The administration has framed the campaign as a long-overdue offensive against the cartels fueling America’s drug crisis — an "America First" posture that treats narco-trafficking as the national security threat it is, rather than a law-enforcement afterthought.
Human rights groups and United Nations officials have objected, calling the strikes extrajudicial killings carried out without due process. The administration counters that the vessels are legitimate military targets operating on known smuggling corridors with cargo bound for American streets.
