The Democratic National Committee made it official Saturday: abolishing federal immigration enforcement is now party policy.
At its summer committee meeting in Austin, Texas, the DNC Resolutions Committee voted 25-12 to advance Resolution 27, urging “Democratic members of Congress to craft legislation abolishing ICE and enacting immigration reform that provides pathways to citizenship, protects workers, and ensures dignity for all impacted people.” The full DNC is expected to ratify the measure before November’s midterm elections.
This was not a surprise to anyone paying attention. The progressive left has been pushing the “Abolish ICE” agenda since 2018. What is remarkable is that the DNC dropped any pretense of moderation just as the Trump administration is posting its best immigration enforcement numbers in decades.
In a feeble attempt to appear balanced, the Resolutions Committee also passed a separate advisory resolution calling for “concrete reforms” to ICE rather than outright elimination. But neither resolution is binding, and the “reform” language was window dressing. The abolition resolution passed by voice vote — unanimously.
The numbers make this choice even more striking. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin reported on August 13 that the Trump administration had achieved 15 straight months of zero releases at the southern border. Drug seizures are up 54 percent compared to the same period under Biden. ICE arrested 51,000 violent criminals in July alone — the highest monthly total the agency has ever recorded. The homicide rate fell to its lowest level in recorded history in 2025.
Against that backdrop, the DNC decided its midterm message is: shut it all down.
“Democrats made it official: they care more about protecting violent illegal aliens than American families,” Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters said after the vote. “This resolution is political suicide, and Democrats will pay for choosing open borders over public safety.”
The White House was equally blunt: “Instead of trying to abolish ICE, Democrats should be thanking ICE law enforcement officers for putting their lives on the line to arrest and remove murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and gang members from American communities.”
The 2026 midterms are shaping up to be a referendum on the border. Democrats just answered the question voters were already asking.
