UCLA School of Law marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the day nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in the worst terrorist attack on American soil, by holding a symposium and granting a platform to the defense attorney for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind behind the brutal terrorist attack that killed so many innocent Americans.
The 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks is being commemorated by the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soil at the UCLA School of Law in a two-day "symposium" – 25 Years After 9/11: Reimagining Freedom, Justice, and Security – featuring as its principal speakers the lawyer for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans, and Yale Law School Professor Aslı Bâli who has called America’s counterterrorism policies “a racist gravy train.”
“This is absolutely absurd,” said FDNY Lieutenant Jim McCaffrey, who responded to the Twin Towers on 9/11. “They are pointing their fingers at the victims. We are the bad guys. We got attacked. It’s mind-boggling. What is going on in academia?”
Sally Regenhard, a woman who lost her 28-year-old son Christian at the World Trade Center on 9/11, commented, “Can’t 9/11 families get a break?”
The 15 minutes allotted to a “Moment of Remembrance” for the victims of 9/11 will likely be the highlight of the event for the few family members and survivors in attendance. The one hour lunch break will no doubt be spent schmoozing with the 9/11 victim family members who are speakers at the event.
As noted above, in addition to defending the man responsible for the murder of 3,000 Americans, Mohammed’s defense attorney is joined on the program by Hussam Ayloush, Director for CAIR in California who, in the weeks following the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas massacre, stated that “Israel should be attacked.” The event will also feature University of Minnesota Law School Professor Amna Akbar who has lauded the alleged assassination of a health insurance CEO by a lone gunman as a “spectacular act of protest.” The program will include panels focused on White Christian nationalism as well as The Ongoing Genocide in Gaza.
The UCLA school of law, facing a series of federal lawsuits brought by the Trump administration over allegations of antisemitism on campus, is sticking to its long-standing academic model of “freedom.” The law school said the views of the speakers listed for the September 11 commemoration do “not imply endorsement by UCLA Law.”
The families of the murdered don’t see it that way.
This is the same institution that has management professors argue that fire departments are too “white” and “masculine,” a faculty member publish false information regarding the shooting of two White people by Kyle Rittenhouse, and allow for anti-Israel protesters to physically exclude Jewish students from central campus buildings.
It is the same establishment that cheered on the post-9/11 surveillance state, the Patriot Act and over a decade of wars in far-off lands. Now they are using the 25th anniversary of the attacks against the country that was attacked. The people who constructed the security apparatus that has been used to violate the rights of American citizens for the past two decades are of the same ideological bent as those who today describe the response to 9/11 as racist.
Twenty-five years later, it is not acceptable for a major law school to be giving CLE credits to the lawyers who represent the men who killed thousands of innocent Americans.
Never forget. And never let them rewrite history.
