President Trump spoke at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday in what may be the most important speech of his second term in office. In that speech, he again declared that he has fundamentally transformed the global landscape, and we are on the cusp of a historic decision regarding Iran.
“Others have talked about peace. I have done peace,” said the President, referring to negotiations with Israel to bring about a historic agreement.
The crux of the speech was an ultimatum to Tehran. Would the president of the United States opt for a deal with Iran, or would he ‘drain the swamp’ and ‘annihilate’ the Islamic Republic? He painted a stark picture and promised to make a decision ‘very quickly’ – ‘do I drive them into Hell very quickly with no chance of survival?’
Of particular note, however, was the real story buried deep within the President’s address to the world body: namely, that he is looking to ink a deal with Iran after the midterm elections in November — and that he expects to do so because both sides will feel that they have no choice but to negotiate a pact. As the President put it in his remarks to the UN, “I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election because it doesn’t make sense for them not to.”
The Iranian delegation to the General Assembly left the hall during the US President’s special address to the UN today when he started talking about Iran. One very junior State Department official in the back of the hall stayed to listen to the end of the US President’s comments to the UN.
He framed the on-going Ukraine conflict in a peace frame and observed that both the Russians and the Ukrainians were ‘tired’ and he had his people working with both sides to bring a rapid end to the conflict ‘faster than most people understand’. As he had throughout his campaign he was not advocating a blank check for endless European war nor more arms for either side.
The security deal between Denmark and the US to lock out adversaries from the Arctic in Greenland was announced immediately after Trump left the UN podium. The pact will be signed by Trump and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the White House in the upcoming weeks. Two major military bases will be built in Greenland under the terms of the agreement.
The US president also used his UN speech to reaffirm his position on several other global hotspots. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Venezuela. “We’re going to be working with Venezuela, with the oil. We’re going to be combining our oil resources with Venezuela and that means we’re going to have control of 60% of the world’s oil,” he said, adding that this would be good for the US. He also spoke about artificial intelligence, or “super intelligence” as he prefers to call it, saying that the U.S. would not fall victim to a “globalist scheme” seeking to take advantage of advanced computer programs.
He is expected to meet bilaterally with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japan’s Takaichi, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He will also host and speak at the “Shield of the Americas” meeting of Latin American leaders. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to arrive in New York later in the week for what will likely be the most significant summit between the two great powers in years.
For the foreign policy hawks on the Hill, it looks like President Trump is in charge of foreign policy and everyone else is just responding.
