President Donald Trump said at a rally that the US might have to leave NATO should the European countries not change course soon.

“If Europeans don't soon find their way, we will have no choice but to leave,” Trump told the crowd. “We will have no choice. It's a very serious situation.”

These comments come in a video clip from a Trump rally, in which he reiterated another point he’s made before: the U.S. cannot continue to carry Europe’s defense forever.

The U.S. president said his country still stands by Europe despite all its “flaws” and “weaknesses.” Europeans “weren’t there to help,” Trump continued, a point that “we can never really forget,” after all the money the U.S. spends on NATO.

He has been urging European nations to spend more on their own defense for years, and has said it was his pressure that led them to raise their defense spending. The administration is also conducting a review of US force posture in Europe, Euronews and Politico have reported.

Trump did not specify what changes he wants to see from Europe, or how long he would give them before pulling the US out of NATO. There has been no US withdrawal from the alliance.
