Wisconsin Democrats selected their poison last night, and by only 3,211 votes David Crowley was able to beat the socialist challenge to secure the Democratic gubernatorial nomination over state Rep. Francesca Hong.
The results, which were not reported until nearly 2:30 AM, proves how far apart the Democratic Party has become. Crowley ended with 39.8% of the vote and Hong with 39.4% of the vote while nearly a third of the vote was distributed between candidates who had dropped out. That isn't a mandate.
Hong, who is a democratic socialist and was endorsed by Piker and Rep. Omar, was leading in all of the polls with double digit leads. During the MU Law School Poll, two weeks before the election, she was leading with 20 points and Crowley was in the single digits. By the last weeks of the race the Democratic establishment led by Governor Evers, had gone in to full panic mode as they spent $4 million on Crowley's ads to save the race, and outside RGA groups had spent $3 million to attack Hong.
What was Hong's main campaign point? Vague statements like defund and abolition of the police, prisons, and the Thanksgiving holiday. She also supported calls to abolish the US Senate that she later had to try to walk back as she claimed these views were formed by her time working on social justice movements. And even Bernie Sanders and AOC, who have inserted themselves in practically every other primary this cycle, opted to stay out of this race.
Crowley now faces off against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, who got endorsed by Donald Trump and won his primary with little challenge. Tiffany voted against the 2020 election results for Biden in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Democrats will surely run with that in the fall, where this contest will likely be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races of the 2026 cycle.
It's important to note that the Democratic establishment is buying themselves a harder general election. Crowley, of course, has his own issues, as the nickname 'Dirt McGirk' emerged from his old social media account and contains some deplorable posts on women, race, and with some foul references to the LGBTQ community. He barely reached double digits before Governor Evers endorsed him. He's a weak candidate. The machine wanted to use him.
The larger focus should be on the Wisconsin primary and the 2026 cycle. Progressive candidates have won primaries in other battleground states such as Colorado, Michigan, and New York. However, Wisconsin voters have bucked the trend. Establishment candidates won this primary, but just barely, with more than 20% of the vote going to candidates who quit the race. Wisconsin Democrats showed no preference to either candidate.
Tiffany has a good map going into the general. Republicans haven't had control of the Wisconsin Governor spot since 2019. That ends or continues in November. The Democrats' civil war has not ended, but it has gone into the background.
