Federal agents conducted an early morning raid on the Washington, D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Monday in connection with a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork, according to two sources close to the investigation.

The search of the Minnesota congresswoman’s home was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), part of the Department of Homeland Security, acting on a search warrant secured by the Department of Justice as part of an ongoing federal investigation, DOJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The department later added that the investigation is criminal in nature. NBC News reports that their sources describe the probe as “years long” and involving “whistleblowers.”

The two sources told Fox News the search stems from the paperwork Omar’s late father filled out when she was a child. She was born in Somalia and fled with her family from the civil war when she was 8 years old. She spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp and then moved to the US.

In terms of what was seized by the federal agents conducting the search of Rep. Omar’s home, neither Fox News nor NBC News reports that any of the Congresswoman’s phones were taken by the authorities, and as of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the search of her home. In the meantime, Omar’s spokesperson has not yet returned Fox News’ nor NBC News’ requests for comment on the matter. NBC reports that the White House and the Department of Homeland Security referred all questions to the Department of Justice.

Border czar Tom Homan said in mid-September that Rep. Omar, D-Minn., was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. “If someone committed immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law,” Homan told Fox News in the interview. “So, I’ll leave it at that. We’ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation.”

Omar has been accused of marrying her brother in an attempt to carry out an immigration scam in 2009. A federal prosecutor recently told Fox News that the statute of limitations could hinder an investigation into that matter. The Minnesota Congresswoman has consistently denied the allegations of fraud.

Her personal finances have been the subject of scrutiny as well. In her 2024 disclosure, Rep. Omar listed her husband’s assets to be worth between $6 million and $30 million. By her 2025 disclosure, however, the two jointly owned assets were reported to have a maximum value of $125,000, a drop of roughly $29.9 million from the prior year’s disclosed values. In the meantime, Rep. Omar maintains she is not a millionaire and has declined to explain the big drop in shared assets between the two years.

Rep. Omar is up for re-election in 22 days in the very Democratic district of Minnesota.

Officials have not said what the warrant covered, what was collected, or whether anyone will be charged.
