BEIRUT - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun was just in The White House and likely conveyed this message to the President of the United States — Lebanese Christians would like to see a U.S. victory in the current conflict with Iran.
In the Levant, Christians hold on to their culture, community, and political power despite decades of attacks against them in a bid to weaken Christian leadership in the Middle East. Their survival as a nation is quite literally at stake as the region boils with warfare and rapid change.
One source in Beirut told us today, "It is imperative that the US wins the war because Iran cannot be allowed to win, for if it does win Shiite ascendency in the region would be disastrous for the Christians.
"On the other hand, the price of a US victory might itself be disastrous for the Christians, so we should be careful about how the war itself will be conducted and what sort of collateral damage it will leave in its wake."
The second comment above centers on the possibility of Washington employing Sunni militants in Syria to attack Hezbollah in the south of Lebanon.
"It's not the victory itself, it's the potential means by which such a victory could be achieved. For instance by empowering Sunnis too much to fight the Shiites, like for instance sending Joulani's hordes to take on Hezbollah.
"Such tactics could potentially be used by the US in order to achieve victory, but they could be quite detrimental to Christian presence in the region.
"To sum up, the US must win but has to be careful about the manner through which it achieves victory."
It is imperative that Washington keep the Christian perspective in mind as it attempts to find a solution to end the fighting.
Most People are so oblivious to the genocide of Christians and most Christians are oblivious to the Lebanese Christians currently being in so much danger with every decision the U.S. makes in partnerships and battles in the middle east.
