The U.S. Senate failed to pass CR bill to fund government, a shutdown will very likely occur at midnight tonight.

Democrats insisted on the need to reverse healthcare related spending provisions contained in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and make COVID-era ACA enhanced premium tax credits permanent. 

Republicans wanterd a short-term extension of current spending levels while lawmakers finalize appropriations for 2026, writes ZH.

Reports indicate at least 100,000 government employees have taken a buy out over the shutdown threat.

“I think we’re headed to a shutdown because the Democrats won’t do the right thing,” Vice President JD Vance told reporters after the meeting, which came less than two days before the shutdown will begin in the absence of a funding deal.

The Democratic participants, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, likewise said that the two sides remain far apart, reported CNBC.

It seems like everyone wants a shutdown this time. As Democrat leaders are being pressured by a coalition of federal unions to 'hold the line' and fight back against budget cuts to 'critical public services' even if it leads to a shutdown and mass layoffs, Republicans appear to have called their bluff ahead of a Sept. 1 deadline, reported Zero Hedge.

According to Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman, House Republicans on today's conference call indicated that House and Senate GOP leadership will have a joint news conference Wednesday morning - the day of the shutdown - and they won't bring the House back into session until next week.

“We have very large differences,” Schumer said after the meeting. But he added that he believes Trump heard Democrats’ objections “for the first time,” suggesting the face-to-face was at least partially constructive.

“It’s up to the Republicans whether they want a shutdown or not,” Schumer said.

“This is purely and simply hostage taking,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said after Monday’s meeting.
