L Todd Wood interviewed  Marwan Abdallah, head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Kataeb Party,  one of the earliest Christian parties in Lebanon. Abdallah addressed a number of topics.

The Kataeb Party occupies a center-right position according to Abdallah. It is a smaller, majority Christian party in opposition to Hezbollah, while the larger FPM party was aligned to Hezbollah to some extent politically, but is concerned about Sunni power in Lebanon and Syria.

Abdallah provides a historical overview of the role of Kataeb Party, and emphasizes that today it is a main force preventing Hezbollah and Syria from taking over Lebanon.

The Christian population in Lebanon is thought to have shrunk over decades of conflict from 70% to 40% of the overall population. There has been an influx of Syrian refugees, mainly with Sunni backgrounds, due to the previous war in Syria.

With an opposing view of the FPM, Abdallah emphasizes the fundamental, financial problems affecting Lebanon, infrastructural challenges, and the wish among ~10 million Lebanese that emigrated over the past 50 years to return and invest in the country, adding to the 5 million Lebanese in-country. (Abdallah later says there is interest, but financial and infrastructural reforms, as well as security and stability, are needed for this to happen.)

Abdallah emphasizes these necessary reforms and modernization elements as a starting point to then approach discussions related to the roles of Christians and other groups in Lebanon.

Also discussed is the issue about the return of Syrian refugees to Syria in relation to Europe and the UN, creating serious challenges for Lebanon. (See “It’s insane”, starting at 11.30).

Abdullah remarked that the Trump administration's policy is prioritizing financial reforms in the country, to prevent terrorism funding and money laundering and disarming Hezbollah. The Trump administration, he says, are also now looking at the Syrian refugee repatriation issues, which presents a long-term threat to Lebanon.

At 21.30+, Abdullah also explains how the Western Woke agenda is harming Lebanon.
