A strongly-worded resolution was voted by the European Parliament with a huge majority against the Muslim Brotherhood. Imart, the sponsor of the resolution, said on X that the huge majority of the parliament for the vote to condemn the MB had brought down a taboo and constituted a “doctrinal change” within the European institutions.

The message of the resolution is clear: Europe must no longer finance, consult or give credence to networks of people and organizations that use the vocabulary of Europe and its democracy in order to undermine its values from within by using its procedures and its money. In addition to this, the Resolution highlights the need for anti-discrimination policy to be used in a manner that is not to shelter from critical examination of Islam and to prevent organized Islamist networks from exploiting such policy for their own purposes. The Resolution also calls on the European Council to consider whether any individuals or entities linked to the Muslim Brotherhood should be included on the EU’s list of terrorist organizations. Furthermore, all EU expenditure must be accountable and every euro of EU funding must be traceable. The European Commission must then report on all such expenditure and whether or not it has been paid to organizations or groups linked to political Islam and/or the Muslim Brotherhood.

Lorenzo Vidino, the director of the extremism program at George Washington University, told Fox News Digital that for almost a decade France and Austria have been lobbying for such a move and that agreement on it is growing across the continent. Edmund Fitton-Brown, a senior fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a former UK ambassador to Yemen, told Fox News Digital that the resolution represents the first real sign of pushback against Islamist entryism in Europe but that turning this vote into legislation will be difficult. He noted that non-violent Islamism in fact feeds into violent Islamist terrorism and does not act as a barrier against it.

A distinction must be drawn between the EU’s stance on the Muslim Brotherhood and that of the US. While the Trump administration has designated the MB and four of its affiliates as terrorist organizations, the Europeans have traditionally viewed the MB through the prism of entryism or subversion, accepting that much of what it does may be lawful when each action is considered alone. For years, many European security services have been vocal in their warnings about the Muslim Brotherhood. This parliamentary resolution will give many of these agencies and governments political backing to view the MB with open suspicion.

It wasn’t all good news, however, for Imart. She thanked negotiators from other political groups on the Parliament. Not so, however, with the socialists and far left, who boycotted the text and circulated a critical statement after the vote which described the resolution as “a stain on Parliament” – lending institutional legitimacy to a racist politics of suspicion toward Muslim communities. The sponsor, however, framed the resolution as a victory but a starting point, insisting that the Commission and Council now have to act on Parliament’s demands.
