President Donald Trump arrived in New York City on Monday afternoon in time to kick off a very busy two days at the United Nations General Assembly. During his time in NYC, Trump will speak to world leaders in his annual address to the UN on Tuesday morning, hold a critical session with the heads of state from the Gulf Cooperation Council, and hold several meetings with foreign leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said that in his UNGA speech, Trump will explain to the international community how his administration has "confronted complex problems around the world and solved them" — focusing above all on Iran. "He will touch on the importance of ensuring that Iran never has a nuclear weapon," Waltz confirmed.
The GCC session is expected to be focused on the next steps in the conflict with Iran, which has been raging for more than six months. Two US officials confirmed to media that Trump would use the gathering to discuss options for dealing with the Houthis — who are now expanding their presence along the Red Sea coast and launching attacks into Saudi Arabia on an almost daily basis.
Also on Tuesday, Trump is to host a reception for the GCC leaders at which he will meet Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president of Venezuela and the leader of the post-Maduro government backed by Washington after Trump sent in US forces to remove the strongman from power in January. That meeting will mark another significant shift in the strategic geometry of the Western Hemisphere under Trump.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to speak at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. His delegation is restricted to a six-block radius of the UN in New York and is not afforded the standard press corps access. There has been no confirmation or denial from senior officials of either government as to whether the two leaders will hold a meeting. When asked about the possibility on Sunday, Trump replied: "I'm probably open to it."
The 81st UNGA High-Level General Debate takes place in New York from Tuesday, September 22 until Sunday, September 28. Some 130 heads of state from across the globe will be descending upon the city at a time of heightened tension, with the post-World War II institutional order under severe strain. Trump has long expressed disdain for the UN and has cut US funding to a number of the organization's agencies since taking office.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also be in New York. Trump and Zelenskyy are set to meet on Tuesday — a session likely to address the ongoing mutual standstill on attacks against energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia, which Trump announced on September 14 and which has so far held.
