Turkey warns Saudi Arabia of consequences.
Speaking on Turkish broadcaster NTV on Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan commented on the recent attacks conducted by the Houthi militants in Saudi Arabia. In accordance with Turkey's newly signed Mecca defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Fidan said he had begun to evaluate and analyze the situation pertaining to Saudi Arabia's territorial integrity, sovereignty and infrastructure.
"Serious attacks are being launched against the territorial integrity, sovereignty and infrastructure of Saudi Arabia," Fidan said of the Houthi attacks. "According to our agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, we have an alliance responsibility towards each other. The President is a man of his word and we are standing by him in this time of crisis. We are analyzing the situation and taking necessary steps."
Turkey could invoke the Mecca agreement, signed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on August 7, 2026, to cope with growing attacks by the Houthis on Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed within the framework of the newly formed Mecca defense pact aimed at ensuring the security and stability of the region, currently under threat due to the conflict between the US and Iran.
He said that Turkey will begin to assess the military needs of Saudi Arabia and coordinate with Pakistan within the scope of the agreement. Fidan also expressed his frustration stating that it is "unacceptable" for Saudi Arabia to be dragged into a conflict between Washington and Tehran, and emphasized that the Kingdom has not taken a stance as a party to the conflict. He also stated that Riyadh is being attacked as if it were a party to the conflict.
Clashes around the strategic Bab al Mandab Strait, the narrow waterway at the mouth of the Red Sea that connects the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Aden, have resulted in hundreds of deaths over recent weeks, as the Houthis imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in July in an attempt to exert increased pressure on Riyadh within the framework of the collective Mecca security pact.
Houthi strikes on Saudi oil facilities and the attacks on the holy city of Mecca are "strongly condemned" by Turkey, Fidan said.
The ever volatile region of the Middle East is teetering on the edge of full-blown conflict. In February the U.S. and Israel launched a series of attacks against Iran which prompted a deluge of Iranian missiles and drones to strike at American bases across the region. Just a few months later in June a temporary cease fire brokered by Pakistan between the U.S. and Tehran began to rapidly fall apart after a series of heated disputes at the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Ever since a four-year truce has collapsed, with heavily armed and re-energized Houthis now actively engaging in full-scale combat across the conflict-scarred nation of Yemen.
He also spoke of the Russia-Ukraine war and said that Turkey has presented a proposal to a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv focusing on a halt to hostilities in the Black Sea and facilitation of the grain exports from the region.
The Mecca pact is not a symbolic agreement for Turkey, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday. The pact was concluded by "a man of his word," he said, adding that as a result Turkey was now engaged in war prevention, or, if need be, war.
